Tattered Curtains

By: B.E.Musachia

Quickly the two women exited the main highway and pulled onto the
narrow dirt road.
"Stop here," Jenny insisted." We can walk the rest of the way."
Smiling at her sister, Marie stepped on the brake, slowly bringing the
car to a stop. "This will befun,"Jenny said, studying the expression
on her older sister's face. Marie was such a good sister, loving, caring,
and down right fun to be with.

"Jenny!" the sudden sound of Marie's voice brought her thoughts back
to the present. "go on," she whispered. "I'll wait in the car.
Marie never cared much for the country life. She was a city girl at
heart and anyway, this was her baby sister's walk down memory lane.
She would be quite content resting in the car.

Jenny slowly made her way down the narrow road that led to the old
homestead. The fragrant sent of pine perfumed the air, how she loved
that fragrance. It was, as she recalled the smell of pine and the
wooded scenery that had first attracted the family to this area.
Jenny's glance traveled upward, her eyes following the elongated
shape of the massive pines. How magnificent they looked against the
horizon. almost as if God had placed them there for that sole purpose.

She took a picture with her heart.

The leisurely walk took on a faster pace. She could hardly wait
to see the old house, the house that held so many memories. There was
the family's first Christmas, the birth of her baby brother and then
one could never forgot the first attempts at gardening, which proved
to be an experience in its self. She longed to recapture those moments.

If only time could have stood still for a brief period, she wished,
as she rounded the last curve in th road.

Jenny stood still, her heart pounding. There stood the old house, a
bit worn and shabby, nothing that a little rouge and lipstick, to coin
a phrase, couldn't handle. Time had not been too terribly cruel, she
thought, while seating herself at the old picnic table. She lovingly
gazed at the place. She could see the tattered pieces of lace covering
the windows, the curtains that her mama had hung with such pride.

She did not feel the need to step inside the house. Had it really
been that long ago? It seemed like only yesterday that the family
decided to make the big move. Fresh in her mind were the events of
that day. Daddy had come home, telling the family of his big surprise.
Then came the bombshell. He informed mama that we would be relocating
to the country, a better enviorment, as he put it.

Jenny was so busy reminiscing, she hadn't noticed Marie had joined her.
Seating herself next to her sister, Marie took Jenny's hand in hers
and softly squeezed it. The girls were silent for a moment. There
was no need for words. They both knew what the other was thinking.
Reflecting back, they realized their father had made the right
decision. But that was then, and for now, well, it was time to go
home. Before leaving, Jenny took one last glance at the old house,
her eyes resting on the lace curtains. They were indeed yellow and
tattered, but in her heart, they looked as white and lovely as the day
her mama had placed them on those windows.

"I thought of you first after my family sat down to watch the video
we gave them. They loved it, to say the least! Within thirty
seconds my mom was crying and my dad did too. They said it was
the best Christmas gift we could have given them!! You did such
a beautiful job! They were so suprised and so touched---they
really, really, really loved it. Thanks for helping to make it so
special to us all. My mom mentioned how the songs were perfect for
the video too! Thanks again!"
