I'll Be Flying By!

By Bob Perks

It's days like these that spark that dream within me.  Driving down the highway I look around me and glad that I don't have a convertible, my spirit soars.

I want to let go of the steering wheel and float skyward.  My head literally touches the ceiling as if my body would free itself of gravity.  No open vehicles for me.  I'm afraid it really might happen.

It is perfect weather for flying.  I don't mean in a plane.  I don't know a thing about flying a plane.  But it is perfect weather for my spirit to soar.

I want desperately to fly.  But I'll admit it.  I'm afraid of heights.  I fight it from here on the ground and force myself to go to high places.  I believe that what you fear the most owns you, controls you.  Maybe that's why my spirit wants to fly.  It craves the freedom I deny it through my foolish fears.

I've had this feeling for as long as I can remember.  As a child I could see myself swooping across fields and landing on top of my house.  I grew up with this dream.  I swear that if it were possible, I believe that I once was a bird.  Not just a bird, a seagull.  Oh you might have thought I'd want to be an eagle.  But eagles have too much responsibility.  That image we have of them would be difficult for me to live up to.  I want to have fun and be free to do the unexpected.

I think if God would tell me that He would make one of my dreams come true, I'd ask that he permit me to fly.

I see myself standing in a field of ankle high green grass and daisies.  With one hop and skip I start running.  God is yelling, "Go Bob, Go!  You can do it!  My doubting is keeping me grounded as I run faster and longer.  Now nearly out of breath, I stumble and lose my stride.  God yells, "Let go of the Earth!  See the air and run on it!  Spread your arms out and see the wind flow underneath.  It's lifting you!"

Then, suddenly my feet separate from their Earthly hold and I am flying.

"Come to me," God says.  "Here, touch my hand."

And reaching for it, I suddenly soar to new heights.  Looking down I realize I fear no more.  Why should I?  It's where God wants me to be.

Then, just as I imagined, I am gliding past the mountain tops.  Teasing with the Earth I dive toward the highest peak and as I pass it I step down for a split second touching the stone with my toes and pushing off I laugh at my ability to rise above it.

Now higher than I ever thought I could go, I see it off in the distance.  The horizon calls my name and dares for me to seek it out.  I know what lies ahead and wanting to make this journey complete I head eastward toward the ocean.  In what seems to be a blinking of an eye, I see below me the curved, sensual line of the shore I had walked along most of my grounded, doubting days.  In a heart beat I dive toward the water.  I see a pattern of wave after wave approaching beach.  The wind blowing against them sprays the salt water into the air as each one kisses the shore.  I come upon the rocky, jagged points where the water and wind meet.  Slowing, I hover, arms stretched out by my side and floating on the updraft I hang in the wind rising and falling just as I had seen the gulls do time and again.  I envied them before, but now I join them in this meditative dance connecting me to the spirit of the wind and the symphonic beat of the waves below.

I am flying.

Just a silly dream?  No.  Silly dreams appear in the night when our minds let go and our imagination plays tricks on us.

This is the stuff that changes lives.  It is the day dream that plays continuously while I am awake.  It is the one that I can control as it plays out in my mind.

Can I fly?  Can I run and lift myself off the ground?  No.

But dreams like these are movies created by the Great Director.  They symbolize the abilities He believes I have.  Playing over and over in my mind, I am permitted to act out the lead role that sees me as successful.  Like all the great changes in this world, like all the wonders of the greatest minds, they all began as a dream acted out time and again.

They believed it...then they saw it.

It is where Disneyland started.  It is where freedom began.  It is where the cure for cancer will be born.

Don't ignore those dreams of day light hours.  It is your future being played full screen and in stereo surround sound.  The Great Director is calling "Places!" and you need but to find your mark on stage and begin to act the part He has written for you.

Perhaps yours is a bit more grounded than mine.  But promise me that when you finally realize that what you dream can become reality, you will look up and wave at me.  I'll be flying by!

Dear Michael,
I realized this afternoon that your Father's Day story about you and Caleb will appear in the Happy Times newspaper at which I work as an editor. You captured my heart as did your son. If I had him here this moment I would hug him and hug him. I'm delighted to have found you and look forward to many more happy times.  May our God richly bless you all.

Thought For The Day:

"As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say.  I just watch what they do."
--Andrew Carnegie

Verse for the Day:

"Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do."
--James 2:18

Kid's Thought for the day:

"If splashing in puddles means you have to wear wet shoes the rest of the day, sometimes it's worth it."

Parent's Thought For The Day

"Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope."
--Bill Cosby

Coach's Thought For The Day

"I have had players who are good, and know they are good; I have had players who are bad and know they are bad; I have had players who are good, but who don't know they are good; I have had players who are bad, but who don't know they are bad.  It is this last group that has won more games for me than the first three groups combined." --Paul "Bear" Bryant

Deep Thought For The Day:

"I'm not saying that the customer service in my bank is bad, but when I went in the other day and asked the clerk to check my balance... she leaned over and pushed me."

REQUESTS:

I have a favor to ask - my niece Sonya is in the St Vincent Catholic Hospital in New York.  She woke up yesterday and both her legs were huge (by the way she is about the size of a human tooth pick) so she went to a convenient care out there and they admitted her to the hospital.  They have already ran a few tests, which came up negative - (and that is a good thing kidneys are still working) - but they are going to do a cat scan today to get more info.  I will find out later today what is going on - but I would feel a heck of a lot better know you were praying for her.  You all know what she means to me and my family - she's like a daughter. Her being in New York and us being here - well it's hard.
Thank you and bless you all and give your kids a hug ok?
Love ya bunches

Video Imagery (Michael's Video Production Business.)

"I thought of you first after my family sat down to watch the video we gave
them. They loved it, to say the least!  Within thirty seconds my mom was
crying and my dad did too.  They said it was the best Christmas gift we
could have given them!!  You did such a beautiful job!  They were so
surprised and so touched---they really, really, really loved it.  Thanks
for helping to make it so special to us all.  My mom mentioned how
the songs were perfect for the video too!  Thanks again!"
