Today we have a poem that you may have read before...but I bet you
read it as "Author Unknown!"  Today I get the pleasure of introducing
Linda Ellis to everyone!  She is the author of "The Dash," "How Much
Do You Make An Hour?", and other incredible poems.  She and her
poetry have been on many TV and Radio programs including Delilah,
and now we get to share her with all of our SFTH members!

Give her a huge Straight From the Heart welcome when you write to her
and be sure to check out her webpage!  Her book would be a great Valentine's
gift! (Hint, hint!)
Michael
P.S.  I encourage all of you to forward or pass along this email as much as you can.
Her poetry has been passed along so many times as "Author Unknown" or with
no author info at all, that it would be nice to let everyone know who thewonderful lady behind the great writing is!

The Dash

by Linda Ellis
Copyright 1998

I read of a reverend who stood to speak
at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth?
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars?the house?the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard?
are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left.
(You could be at "dash mid-range.")

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile?
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
with your life's actions to rehash,
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

***********

Linda Ellis was born in Miami, Florida where she spent her childhood. She started writing poems as a child -- a talent inherited from her Irish mother and grandmother.  In 1994, popular radio personality, Moby in the Morning read her first poem on the air.  Linda believes this event is what launched a whole new career for her.

Linda?s poems are shared in many places, including the boardrooms of Corporate America, radio and television programs and domestic and international newspaper and magazine publications.  Her poem, "The Dash" has been an inspiration to thousands and has been published numerous times, most recently in the books Healing Grief, a New York Times Bestseller by James Van Praagh and The New Success Rules for Women by Susan Abrams.

She has combined many of her favorites in "The Dash and Other Poems by
Linda Ellis" (© 1999).  This poetry booklet is available, signed by the author,
from her web site at:

Linda is currently writing new poems to share her life's experiences and inspire
others.

Thought For The Day:

"You can't act like a skunk without someone getting wind of it."

Verse for the Day:

"A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things:
and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things."--Matthew 12:35

Kid's Thought For The Day:

A little girl who was late coming home for supper. Her
mother made the expected irate parent's demand to know
where she had been.

The little girl replied that she had stopped to help
Janie, whose bicycle was broken in a fall.

"But you don't know anything about fixing bicycles,"
her mother responded.

"I know that," the girl said. "I just stopped to help
her cry."

Parent's Thought For The Day:

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."--Frederick Douglass

Coach's Thought For The Day:

"A good coach can humble you without humiliating you and encourage you
without flattering you." --Michael T. Powers

Deep Thought For The Day:

"How come professional athletes never ask to renegotiate
their contracts for LESS money after they have a bad season?"

"I thought of you first after my family sat down to watch the video we gave
them. They loved it, to say the least!  Within thirty seconds my mom was
crying and my dad did too.  They said it was the best Christmas gift we could
have given them!!  You did such a beautiful job!  They were so surprised and so
touched---they really, really, really loved it.  Thanks for helping to make it so
special to us all.  My mom mentioned how the songs were perfect for the
video too!  Thanks again!"
