The Scottish Kilt

By Debra A. Davidson

It is hard to enjoy a weekend away with friends
when you have left behind your Father dying of
cancer. In the Australian Winter of 2000, my
husband Guy and I found ourselves in the
country with friends from our local church.  We
have a Christmas in July weekend away each
year to enjoy the cold weather and a hot Christmas
meal.  Our Christmas is in Summer and we usually
experience very hot weather.

Part of me wanted to stay back in the City close
to Dad.  The other part of me knew I desperately
needed a break away from the demands of my sick father.

We enjoyed morning tea in the bush listening to
the Bellbirds call to each other.  They make an
amazing ringing noise like a bell, hence the name
Bellbird.  After a beautiful drive over winding roads
we finally made the country town where we would
be staying the night in a warm motel.

My heart was heavy and my mind trying to
comprehend just how I should organize a funeral
service for my Father.  I have loved the Lord for
many years but no one else including Dad knew
Him.  The challenge lay in how to give Dad a
loving, respectful funeral when many of my family
had very little time for him at all.

In all of this pondering, I felt led to have a Scottish
theme as Dad was born on the Isle of Skye in
Scotland. I would therefore need tartans from the
Lothian or Stuart Clans.  I thought nothing more
of this as I shared the idea with friends around
a warm fire that night.  We had been asked to go
to a little market held once a month over the road
from our Motel the next day.  Who knows what the
night held we'd probably wander over if we felt like it.

Next morning, Guy and I wandered across the
road to the market in an old warehouse.  It was
really quite interesting with Country crafts and
goodies to tempt us.  There were many tables
laden with treasures that had now become
someone's trash.

As we strolled around looking for that special item
to take home I spotted something like tartan
material on a table not too far away from us.  As
we got closer I realized it was actually a Scottish
Kilt.  I couldn't believe my eyes and inquired of the
lady running the stall as to the name of the Tartan.
She thought for a while and said that it was
genuinely from Scotland and from the Stuart
Clan.  The exact same tartan I was looking
for.  Needless to say, we bought the Kilt and
took it home with us.  How precious a reminder
to me of my Heavenly Father's care for His
grieving daughter.

On a clear day in September, my sixteen
year old daughter walked to the front of the
funeral home to share the reading at her
Grandfather's funeral.  She looked beautiful
in her Stuart Tartan Kilt that the Lord had led
me to months before.

I am sure my Dad would have approved of his
granddaughter wearing the family colors for
him on that clear September day when we
came together to remember his life.

In my minds eye I think Dad would have smiled
to see Emma wearing her beautiful Scottish Kilt.

I dedicate this story to Lionel Keith Stuart
Lothian who died September 10, 2000 and
was born again in his 87th year. See you in heaven Dad!

Atta boy!  From a faraway South Africa I wish you God's
richest blessings in your future and especially with Heart
Touchers!  It is great how God uses ordinary people to
be His Hands and Feet here on earth -- you are a
wonderful example to all of us!  God bless and keep you
and your family!

PS Don't forget to advertise about your teens page.
I have 3 of them and need all the help I can to keep

Congratulations on your new job Michael.  I was
particularly interested to hear about your desire
to start a weekly email list for teens.  As an avid
fan of your daily messages (that I have trouble
getting my teenage boys to read as they are too
long!) I would be very interested in giving you their
email addresses so they can receive something
directed at them.  I am sure I will see progress
reported often as this wonderful idea becomes fruitful.

Thought For The Day:

"Render more service than that for which you are
paid and you will soon be paid for more than
you render.  This is the law of increasing returns."
--Napoleon Hill

Verse for the Day:

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will
also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously
will also reap generously." 2 Corinthians 9:6

Kid's Thought For The Day:

"Don't let the spaghetti sauce leak onto your green beans."

Parent's Thought For The Day

"The good news is that grandchildren keep
you young. The bad news is that after you
spend time with them you feel your age."
--Joan Holleman

Coach's Thought For The Day

Habit is most difficult to defeat.  If you delete the
first letter, it doesn't not change "a bit" Delete
another and you still have a "bit" left.  Take off
still another and the whole of it remains. But
if you take off another, it is wholly used up.
Goes to prove if you want to get rid of a habit,
you must throw it off altogether. --Mandel

Deep Thought For The Day:

"I am returning this otherwise good typing paper
to you because someone has printed gibberish
all over it and put your name at the top."

REQUESTS:

Dear Michael,
Please add my wife Joan Morrow to your prayer list. Joan and I have worked in our business together for 25 years. Our Marriage is still fresh and strong today because or our commitment to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and each other. Joan has had three successful cancer surgery's and God has healed her in all three. (We are Praising God.) Joanie now has Shingles and is in constant pain. She is still helping me in our business.
Michael, because of the recession here in the Silicon Valley our customers are going out of business and we are very likely going to have to close our doors too. Pray that we are successful in our search for new customers that we can provide our services too. Joanie is having trouble sleeping at night. She cannot release the cares we share for our customer's, Friends and our venders and employee's. Pray that she will find the peace that only God can provide and he will heal her.
Your brother in Christ.

Please continue to pray for Bob Colbenson. He has leukemia, the type that is
so bad that they cannot treat him because of his age. He is still trying
blood transfusions and next step will be a bone marrow if they can get his
blood count up high enough. Please pray for strength and encouragement for
him and his wife Dorie and that if the Lord wills, he will get to
remission. Thank you!

"I thought of you first after my family sat down to watch
the video we gave them. They loved it, to say the
least!  Within thirty seconds my mom was crying
and my dad did too. They said it was the best
Christmas gift we could have given them!!  You
did such a beautiful job!  They were so surprised
and so touched--they really, really, really loved it.
Thanks for helping to make it so special to us all.
My mom mentioned how the songs were perfect
for the video too! Thanks again!"

A number of people have written to us asking what
an EBook is, since our book is being offered in
both print and EBook versions.  An EBook is a
book that can be downloaded and read right on
your computer. The advantage of ordering
the EBook is that is costs less, $8.95 (No other
charges), as compared to $14.95 + shipping and
handling for the print book.  Plus you can download
the EBook and begin reading the stories in a few
minutes!  EBooks are read via Acrobat Reader,
which is software that most of you already have
on your computer. And if for some reason you
don't, it can be downloaded free of charge at the
web site.  So for those of you who don't want to
wait for the print book to be delivered, check out
this web site to order the EBook version of
Straight From the Heart "A Celebration of Life."
